For years I was fairly certain that the Luftwaffe fighter command and control organization was very systematic, with a relationship between commands and operational units, which followed standardized conventions and hence led to some degree of simplicity but also inflexibility.  This has now proven to be the case.  Below is tables of organization for 1 - 5 JD as of 31 AUG 1943. They illustrate the following principle.  One NJ Geschw. was assigned to one JD. The GefStd of the JD was located on an airfield and the NJ Geschw. staff was collocated.  The GefStd of a NJRF was located on an airfield, which normally also housed a NJ Gr.  The NJRF exercised operational control over that Gruppe only.  Further a NJRF exercised operational control over a number of radarstations in a rigid organizational relationship.  As the number of flying units increased, elements from other NJ Geschw. could also be assigned to the JD.  The chart below does thus not depict all flying units within the respective JD area of responsibility.
